The label asked for a new singer two weeks after Nowell’s death

More than 25 years after frontman Bradley Nowell died, Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh revealed that the band were almost immediately asked to hire a new singer.

In a recent interview with radio host Stryker for the show Out of order, Gaugh recalled the record company’s response to Nowell’s untimely death. “They wanted to set up interviews and trials for Sublime’s new singer,” the drummer revealed, before echoing what he was told: “The show has to go on. You get back on the bus. swear to god, in two weeks you’ll be playing in stadiums find somebody good.

Unsurprisingly, Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson immediately dismissed the idea.

“Go on your own,” the drummer recalls. “Sublime, it was the three of us together. And that was our family. And we just told them we couldn’t [replace Bradley]. “

Nowell’s fatal heroin overdose occurred on May 25, 1996, just days before the band’s eponymous LP was released. Suddenly, the album almost did not see the light of day.

“They were talking about the canning of the release because it was supposed to be released in June,” Gaugh explained. “We had a tough date in June and were heading to Europe for the first time just as this happened.”

“So they were eager for us to complete the goals and the mission at hand, but we just couldn’t do it,” continued the drummer. “We had spoken to them seriously a few times, like, ‘You have to listen to this. That’s good. It’s going to be fine. So they realized they really wanted to release it, and they released it a month later.

Released July 30, 1996, Gorgeous sold over six million copies, spawning massive radio hits including “What I Got”, “Santeria” and “Wrong Way”. The band will be celebrating the album’s 25th anniversary this year with several projects, including a graphic novel by Z2 Comics and a cover and remix LP directed by Travis Barker of Blink 182.
