Meet the Dickson Old Timers Day committee preparing for the September festival
The iconic Dickson Old Timers Day festival is making a comeback after a year-long hiatus under the direction of volunteer Dickson County residents.
The 62nd Old Timers Day will be held on September 25 in downtown Dickson. The Grand Marshals for 2021 will be the Dickson County Chamber and the Stewart Lumber Company, both of which are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.
The festival traditionally takes place on the first weekend of May but was postponed to September as part of COVID precautions. The festival was canceled last year due to COVID, which was the first time the entire event has been canceled. The heavy storms that caused the historic 2010 flooding forced organizers to cancel the day’s activities after the annual Civitan Pancake Breakfast and in 1983 the rain started towards the end of the annual parade, forcing the rest of the celebration to be canceled.
The eight-member committee has prepared for the festival, which will take place in about two months.
“We were encouraged enough by the community’s response in the fight against the coronavirus that we felt safe to schedule Alumni Day this fall,” said committee chair Joan Rial.
Half of the committee members are appointed by Dickson Mayor Don Weiss Jr. and the other half by Dickson County Chamber Speaker Corey Albert under bylaws passed in 2018.
The current members of the Alumni Day committee are Rial, Councilor Horace Perkins III, Andi Arms, Paige Bumpus, Brandon Cardwell, Dan Smith, Pam Edmond and Elizabeth Kuhns.
The committee meets regularly and works with various volunteers to organize the new annual celebration of the 62nd Alumni Day.
Rial has served as director of the Dickson Senior Center since January 2017. Perkins, who has worked for Joel’s Body Shop for over 25 years, has served on the Dickson City Council representing the Third Ward since 2011. Arms is a Human Resources Generalist at Dal-Tile. . Bumpus is the director of children at Cross Point Church. Cardwell is an agent at ER Real Estate Group. Smith and his wife, Sharon, are co-owners of House of Brews, House of Vines and Events on Main in downtown Dickson. Edmond is responsible for the help desk and food bank at the Dickson County Aid Center. Kuhns is the communications specialist for Dickson Electric System.
As is customary, the committee reserves musical groups for several stages in order to present a variety of performance styles throughout the day. The festival grounds centered around the War Memorial include several stages and venues that will host musical performances. The traditional parts of Elders Day will remain, including the parade through the city center.
