‘Gen X’ Get Ready for Miami Carnival 2022 with Virtual Costume Launch – NBC 6 South Florida

The Miami Carnival is known as one of the largest events for the South Florida Caribbean community.

The event, called “the ultimate cultural experience”, doesn’t take place until the Indigenous Peoples Day weekend in October, but a group is already set. Four of the leaders of carnival group Gen X spoke to NBC 6 about Miami Carnival 2022.

“Gen Xers have been part of the Miami Carnival since at least 1999,” said Tagyei Belinfante of Gen X Band. “So when you come to Gen X, you’re going to feel what you feel in your home country. So if you’re from Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, when you come to Gen X, you’re going to feel that vibe.

This year, the group held a virtual costume launch, on location from Trinidad and Tobago.

“We wanted to get back to the real roots of the festival,” said Gen X’s Marc Christian. So we shot on location in Trinidad, to capture the essence and authentic nature of Carnival. So we recorded everything and did a virtual launch.

They posted the video on social media showcasing their costume options for the upcoming carnival. The options are open now, more than four months before this year’s carnival leaves the Miami-Dade fairgrounds.

“We’d like to give customers a fairly long runway to make up their minds, make the decision to join the Miami Carnival,” Gen X’s Matthew Waddell said. “The second part would be the timeline, the timeline for production to be complete. “

Many costume designers are overseas and need time to produce handmade costumes.

Conductors say this year’s theme “Origins-Birth of a Culture” has deep meaning.

“Our goal here was to show that as Caribbean people we share a common history,” Christian said. “Carnival was born out of a pretty complicated background. It included colonialism and religious practices, and it evolved over the years until we took it as a community and made it a beautiful festival celebrating freedom, emancipation and self-expression.
