It’s not every day that you meet a GP who is also the head of a successful indie rock band! However, the local doctor, Dr Peter Clarke is one of them.

During the day, Peter looks after the residents of the Eaton Central 7 Day Family Practice. As night falls, you can find him writing, recording, and performing music with his band Mermaid Avenue.

Mermaid Avenue is an indie / alt.country rock band from Warner / Eatons Hill. They were formed in 2015 and, since they first cut their teeth live in 2015, they have become a regular fixture on the Brisbane scene, driven by Peter’s prolific writing and Chris’ musicality. Wong and Mike Kearey (guitars), Mark Egan (bass), Casey Lee (keyboards) and Anthony Judd (drums).

To date, the band has been very well received by critics and recently finished recording songs from their second album ‘Sugartown’ at the Barn Recording Studio in Lockyer Valley. Additionally, they have just released their fourth single from the album ‘Old with You’, mixed by iconic Australian producer Lachlan ‘magoo’ Goold who has also worked with artists such as Midnight Oil, Powderfinger, Kate Miller-Heidke and Custard. Incidentally, the song was Banks Radio Australia’s number 1 song in August!

Not all of this success is bad for a band with a singer who only started singing and playing guitar in his twenties! Musicality comes naturally to Peter. As he explains, he has had no formal training and is mostly self-taught.

“I didn’t start singing or playing guitar until my early twenties. I was basically put in front of a microphone to sing when a friend asked me to join a band based on some lyrics / bad poetry that I found hanging out after a few beers one night, ”Dr Peter said.

“I was a terrible singer at the time, with no idea what I was doing. I had a few singing lessons once I heard a recording of myself and understood how bad I was, but since then I have learned to sing over the years by trial and error.

The band’s music is available on Spotify, iTunes, Applemusic, Bandcamp, Baby CD and more. You can also find out more about the group on their website www.mermaidavenueband.com
