Detroit Navy Week will include a concert in Monroe

Today’s Navy Band concert in Monroe is one of many events taking place throughout the Detroit area this week for Navy Week.

Navy Week runs until July 17 and will bring many sailors to the area. The events led to two days of Navy flight demonstrations by the Blue Angels at the Thunder Over Michigan Air Show at Ypsilanti’s Willow Run Airport.

“Side Boys,” a Chicago-based U.S. Navy band, will perform outdoors from 4-5 p.m. today at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 333 N. Dixie Highway.

Participants should bring blankets or garden chairs.

A formal presentation will take place inside from 3-4 p.m. today at the Welcome Center and will include Navy presenters from across the country and a display of the Navy uniform.

Admission and parking are free.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Brian Coon of Maybee, a Naval Reserve officer, helps coordinate Navy Week events in Detroit this year.

“I’m very excited about our Monroe event,” Coon said. “There will be sailors from across the fleet, Naval History and Heritage Command, concert and more.”

11 a.m. to noon: Navy Band Great Lakes performing a brass quintet concert at the Henry Ford Museum’s Greenfield Village, Dearborn

Tuesday:

11 a.m. to noon: Navy Band Great Lakes performing a marching band concert at the Henry Ford Museum’s Greenfield Village, Dearborn

Noon-1 p.m.: Navy Band Great Lakes performing a brass quintet concert at the Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak

Wednesday:

11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.: Navy/Police Dept. Week Explorer Youth Day at Farwell Field in Detroit; featuring sailors from across the fleet, a Navy Band Great Lakes marching band concert and a demonstration by the Navy Parachute Team

Noon-1 p.m.: Navy Band Great Lakes performing a brass quintet concert at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit

Noon-1 p.m.: Navy Band Great Lakes performing a concert of wind instruments at the Wright Museum in Detroit

7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.: Navy Band Great Lakes performing a wind ensemble concert at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial

Thursday:

11 a.m.-noon: Navy parachute team jumps into Belle Isle

7-8 p.m.: Navy Band Great Lakes performing popular music at Kellogg Park, Plymouth

Friday:

7-8 p.m.: Navy Band Great Lakes performs popular music concert at McFadden Ross House in Dearborn

Saturday:

11am-1pm: Navy Week at Eastern Market in Detroit; Fleet sailors and Navy Band Great Lakes performing popular music concert
