The Auburn Community Concert Band, under the direction of Milt Simon, will launch their annual summer series of weekly evening outdoor concerts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, at Festival Plaza in downtown Auburn.

The show is the first of 8 programs scheduled for this Main Street location. The free concerts will continue weekly on Wednesday evenings until August 25 – weather permitting. There will be no place of rain this summer. In the event of inclement weather, that evening’s concert will be canceled and an announcement will be posted on the band’s website at www.auburncommunityband.com.

“The next concert season marks another return to normal,” according to group director Milt Simon. Last summer, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of popular concerts and marked the first time in 39 years that the group has not been seen performing every Wednesday night in downtown Auburn. Last year was still recorded as our 39th season, ”said Simon,“ because we had rehearsals from early January to mid-March. What made the season memorable, unfortunately, was the forced cancellation of all of our scheduled concerts. “

With the recent easing of security mandates related to COVID, the group resumed their rehearsals on May 5, with the return of 34 of the previous 50 participants. This season’s volunteer musicians are in their mid-teens to 80s and collectively represent a total of 12 communities in central Maine.

Director Simon first organized the group in the fall of 1981. Simon said that the organization “gives many people the chance to use musical talents neglected from their high school years, and the whole community in. take advantage “. He added that the Auburn group is still one of the largest community groups in the state of Maine and their performances often draw audiences of 300 to 400 people.

Every Wednesday evening in July and August, the band will present a 75-minute program featuring popular hit songs from the 60s to the present day. Simon predicts that the band’s songbook will appeal to audiences of all ages. “If you have a favorite song that has been heard on the radio or in the movies, there’s a good chance our band will perform it in the next 8-week concert series,” Simon said.

Those planning to attend one of the Wednesday night shows at Festival Plaza should bring their own chair to sit on and it is advisable to arrive well before the concert start time of 7:00 p.m. as a large audience is expected to return this summer. Ample free parking is available in the municipal parking lot located just in front of the Plaza.
