Ace Frehley with special guests Annex Epic Center Green Bay, WI 5/11/2022

This was my first time at the epic center in Green Bay. I have to say that I was really impressed. Not only with sight lines, but only with the building itself. What a great place to see a show. If you’re ever able to catch a live show there, I highly recommend you do.

local band Annex open the show. They are 1/2 original, half cover strip. They have been around for a while and have gone through a few line-up changes. They were a great opening act for that night and did a terrific job. I found myself enjoying their original songs a lot more than the covers. Some of the covers they played were from Cars, cheap stuff, motor head and other bands from the 80s. What really interested me about them, aside from their incredible stage set-up, were the original songs, including “Sleep Tight”, “You Brought It on Yourself” and “Sleep Tight” , to name a few. I expected them to be a Hard Rock band, which they are, but it’s not Heavy Metal. I personally enjoyed that. I heard a lot of different bands in these songs from The Replacements, Squeeze and very modern bands like 3 Doors Down. Listening to them, all these different bands came to mind because I was trying to figure out why they sounded so familiar. Give them a listen, especially if you like well-written, nifty pop songs.

Headlining Ace Frehley is one of my favorites. In recent years he has tended to move away from his solo material and play more Embrace songs that have always moved me. I know he is an important part of the history of this band being one of the founding members, but I would prefer to hear his solo material. Well, tonight he didn’t disappoint and he even reversed some Kiss songs. For those of you who follow him, he dropped “Love Gun” and added “Strutter”. He added a section of “God of Thunder” which turned into “New York Groove”. I brought back “Rock Soldiers” and performed one of my favorite “Hard Times”.

I’ve seen him play more times than I can count, and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen him play. You can just tell there’s something awesome going on with him. Of course, his group is always on top. Ryan Spencer Cook and Jeremy Asbrock two of three Talisman are the driving force of the group. That consistency really made the shows special. I had the opportunity to speak with ace and one of the things he told me was that the stock was at this point in its life, “quality of life is the most important thing” . He seems to really like his schedule where he’ll play two or three shows in a row and then have four or five days off. For his fans who are really hardcore and love all the minutiae, he bought a boat and loves to fish. He is currently working on building everything with it, including the motor, a canopy and other extras he is going to add. He finds himself spending more time at home and really enjoying it. I think rock ‘n’ roll in that kind of situation works well for Ace. it was wonderful to see how happy he is and how well he is. go see it as soon as you can, you won’t be disappointed.
