Artist Statement

I use the bold lines of cut paper to create pictures inspired by nature as well as abstract forms.

Images of multicolored, fanciful birds, flowers and animals were inspired by traditional Polish style folk art cut paper designs called Wycinanki. They are made entirely of cut and pasted papers, often layered over an intricate black background. I enjoy working with many colors to achieve bright, whimsical and ornate designs.

My abstract pictures are influenced by Kandinsky, Klee, and especially Matisse.  I often begin with a handful of cut paper shapes that I arrange to create a satisfying balance of negative and positive space.  I then add additional elements to create equilibrium between colors and forms. These pictures are more free-style and convey a sense of rhythm or motion as well as the harmonies between different colors.
